Grocery receipts

A grocery receipt can mix packaged goods, weighed produce, coupons, and deposits. Keep the item detail so a later review can distinguish the basket from the final amount paid.

Create Receipt

Which fields to keep

Start with the business name, actual purchase date, currency, and payment method. Add the known details for this transaction:

  • Product or produce description
  • Weight and price per unit for weighed items
  • Coupons, discounts, and container deposits

Review subtotal, tax, tip, and fees

Compare quantity × unit price with each line amount. Record a coupon once, at the line or order level where it was applied. Keep deposits separate from merchandise when the source does so; a basket can contain items with different tax treatment.

Add the line amounts, subtract discounts once, and reconcile tax, tip, and fees with the amount paid. If there is a difference, review the source before adding an adjustment. An unknown amount is not the same as a confirmed zero.

Reading the numbers

An observed rate is not a statutory rate

If a receipt shows a $50 subtotal and $3 tax, $3 ÷ $50 × 100 = 6%. That is the observed proportion relative to that subtotal. This is an arithmetic example, not a recommended tax rate for this category.

A mix of taxed and untaxed items, discounts, or fees can change the base. With a zero subtotal, that percentage cannot be calculated. Preserve the documented tax; do not infer tax rules or invent a rate from one receipt.

Recorded amounts in the same currency

Observed tax rate 8.25%

This is a recorded ratio, not a jurisdiction’s legal tax rate or tax advice. Item exemptions, local rules, discounts, and taxable bases can affect the percentage shown.

Store tax with the receipt in CMR Vault and check the Purchase date before exporting. No local or current tax rates are supplied.

Create or recreate this record

  1. Gather the available records and ask the merchant for a copy if you need its original.
  2. Open Create Receipt, choose the style and width, and enter only known details of a real transaction.
  3. Review line items and totals. Leave unknown details blank or identify them as unknown.
  4. Set Payment → Purchase date and review the preview before saving. A recreated record does not become a merchant-issued original.

Save and organize in CMR Vault

Separate household and business purchases using accurate categories. A descriptive Vault name such as “Office groceries — September” helps distinguish repeat visits without changing the store name.

Sign in, save to CMR Vault, and wait for confirmation. The local draft belongs to this browser; it is not a confirmed cloud copy. Check Purchase date so filters, dates, and exports agree.

Choose CSV, XLSX, or the Expense Workbook

Use summary CSV for one row per receipt and itemized CSV for line items. Do not add a repeated receipt total as if it were another item. The XLSX CMR Expense Workbook brings together a Dashboard, receipts, line items, and summaries by month, category, merchant, and payment method. Check currency, merchant, and Purchase date before sharing; output options depend on available export access.

Common questions

How do I record weighed produce?

Use the recorded weight as quantity and the matching unit price when known. Do not replace kilograms with item counts or guess a unit price from the basket total.

Is this receipt verified by the merchant?

No. CreateMyReceipt organizes user-entered information. For an original or payment confirmation, consult the merchant or your payment record.
